Moving House

Post image for Moving House

An intermittent little eyebrow twitch reminds me that our departure from San Diego and move back to the Bay Area is a little more than two weeks away. I’ve been a giant ball of stress for the past few months and I have a feeling that’s not likely to change anytime soon. Selling our house has been a roller coaster — in escrow, out of escrow, back in escrow. Finding a new place to live has proven to be a lot more complicated now that we have little kids — and schools — to consider. San Diego isn’t a cheap place to live, but the Bay Area is out-of-its-mind expensive and that’s kind of driving me out of my own mind.

The kids and the move — that’s where 99% of my focus has been lately. There’s been little time for much else…including blogging.

I want to be blogging. It’s a comfort to me to share what I’ve been cooking and eating — and I’ve continued to do plenty of sharing on Instagram. So why no blog posts? I’ve been stewing over that question for a while. I think it stems from pressure I feel — both internal and external — to put forth a “polished, professional and perfect” presentation on the blog. I’ve had arbitrary “rules” about this blog for a long time — a post needs to have a nice, high quality (read: sharable) photo and a recipe (ideally one that can be prepared on the panini press). That’s nice and all…but maybe it doesn’t work for me anymore.

I love iPhone pics. In fact, except for blogging purposes, it’s the only camera I ever use — even on vacation. I like to share what I’m up to in the moment — not a week later, once I’ve cobbled the time together to present it in a polished manner. Scheduling posts ahead of time? It’s not for me. I don’t decide a week in advance the conversation I want to have with my day-to-day friends, and I don’t want to pre-plan my conversations with you.

Recipes — I do think they’re important, especially if any of you are looking to recreate what I’m sharing. But does a recipe always have to be a formal list of ingredients and numbered instructions? I don’t think so. When friends ask me how I made a dish I can usually describe it — accurately — in a few quick sentences of a Facebook comment. Baking? That’s more of a science, so a formally written recipe is probably more warranted. All I’m saying is…my real life isn’t always polished and perfect (far from it) — I don’t think my blog life should strive to be either.

Panini Happy has been a virtual home for me for more than 6 years — and even though my family is moving from one physical house to another, this online one isn’t going anywhere. What’s next? That’s still to be determined. But I do know this: it’s going to be real, it’s going to be comfortable, it’s going to reflect what I’m cooking/eating/thinking/doing and you will always be welcome to drop in and stay a while. 🙂

Good to see you writing here — I’ve been wondering how your move was going. As for the blog, I enjoy a good iPhone photo for the same reason. It just works sometimes much better. And ditto on the recipes. I can google just about any recipe and tons of very similar things come up. I figure make what you want, give the notes, and just give a link. Or not : Here’s to a smoooooooooth move! 😀

Yes. I feel you! Perhaps that’s why I love Instagram so much, it’s much more in the moment and candid. Whatever and wherever this blog space takes you, I’ll be happy to follow. And I’ll be even happier to see you in person once you are moved to this part of the world! Hang in there with the move 🙂

I can truly relate on many levels. Still figuring out much of the same actually. Funny, a move and a kid triggered it on my end too 😉

Good luck with the move and everything else that comes your way!! xoxo

Ps…I love iPhone non-recipe recipes the best. 🙂

So the interesting thing to me is that there are so many bloggers who have been blogging around the same length you and I have who are expressing the same feelings lately. 7 year itch, maybe?
I love your space here and well, as an instaho, you know I love iPhone photos 🙂
I love even more though that you are pulling yourself away some to live your life. So many bloggers are so invested in blogging I’m afraid their lives are getting neglected.
Love you much! Good luck with the move!!

Super excited you’ll be near me!!! Have a great move and see you soon!

re: blogging? I have been feeling some kind of way about it for a while. I think Kristen may have something with the 7 year itch. Mine seems to be the 7 year scratch! 🙂

Congratulations on the move. It can be very stressful, but hopefully once you are settled life will calm back down. I think many of us that have been blogging since the early days (8-1/2 years here) reach a point, or sometimes several points, where we want to step back and see what might work better for us and where we are in life. I actually like Instagram photos in blog posts and have experimented with using them. It feels very casual, candid, and in the moment.

Congrats on the move. Having just moved myself, I can really sympathize with what a pain it can be. It was a ton of work, but now that we’re settled in, it’s like a memory. Kind of like childbirth. 🙂 I hope everything works out for you, and somehow I’m certain it will! And congrats also for taking the time you need to focus on your life. We’ll be looking forward to your updates, in whatever form they come in, when you’re ready!

Well, my dear, you are going from one beautiful city to another. You live 10-minutes from me and we never got together at your illustrious Starbucks. Shame on me. Wishing you all the best in your new adventures! xoxxoo

Hi Kathy. Moving is hard, not just physically but emotionally as well. Hope it goes smooth and you are happy in the bay area. I love it up there but, yeah, crazy cost of living. Give yourself some grace. I’ve just been through a very tough family emergency and am trying to figure out how to share about it. Not just recipes, but more, about life and surviving when the storms come. Thanks for writing what you did, from the heart. it’s making me think about my own journey as a blogger. Looking forward to seeing new photos of you settled in! Oh, and I am with you in iPhones. I am always taking snaps with it but want to get better at a “big girl” camera. Just got to pick them up! Actually, through my storm and scrambling to keep my blog going, one day I ended up shooting the post as Kent could not. Could not believe I did it! And it came out pretty good! The one on the cole slaw. Blessings on your move and a fresh start!

I really love this post. I think it spoke to me because there is a constant need for perfection in the blogging industry that sometimes feels impossible to fulfill. Striving but never quite reaching. Does it take the joy away for me? Not necessarily but it is something to consider.

Excellent and honest. Do what is enjoyable to you, you’re the boss of your blog! And I am so addicted to Instagram that I guarantee I’ll be riveted by whatever you post. 🙂 None of us are going anywhere, so take your time and do only as much as you feel up to doing. We moved last summer and (shudder). Hair = torn out. But it will be over soon. I’m glad you checked in.

After ruining a pan yesterday while trying to make a mozzarella and tomato panini, I decided to buy a panini press and jump into the world of paninis. I found your blog, and I can see that I need not go any further.

Wow! Thanks for being here. Breakfast too??? Holy Smokes!

18 Emily of Sugar Plum August 11, 2014 at 6:18 pm

Hope you’re doing well, Kathy! I love following you on Instagram. I know exactly how you feel, too. I’ve got that 7 year itch as well. It’ll be 7 years of blogging for me in September, I think.

I thought I’d stop by and see how you were doing. That mac and cheese panini looks real good!

Thanks so much for checking in, Emily! My kitchen is finally unpacked…I’m slowly trying to get my cooking mojo back. 🙂 We’ve been doing a ton of exploring in our new area — on the whole it’s been a fun summer!
