A hamburger is virtually never called a sandwich by anyone. McDonald’s and Burger King often refer to Big Mac sandwich or Whopper sandwich in their ads. They do this to ensure that over time consumers do not regard Big Mac and Whopper as generic terms , thus no longer protected by copyright. At one time aspirin was a brand name. Kleenix and Band-Aid remain copyrighted names – but to most everyone those are generic terms.

Kathy this post is sooo fun! The only one I might say was a sandwich here is the hotdog. Just first instinct.

Very interesting questions and results, Kathy! I must say that I had a strong and immediate “certainty” that: (1) hot dogs and hamburgers are absolutely sandwiches because they’re served between sliced and pre-baked rolls made of yeasted dough of the same same composition as standard bread; (2) crepes and quesadillas are absolutely not sandwiches since their wrappers aren’t baked and don’t include yeast; and (3) piroshkis are pastries. But then my mind reeled and I lost my grip when I considered how to categorize filled baked breads, such as strombolis. Fun!

What fun and great feedback! My mother rarely had hamburger buns so our homemade hamburgers were often nestled between two slices of plain white bread. Every once in a while, I actually crave one. Ew!

What a thought-provoking post. Now, you have me scratching my head over whether a hot dog is indeed a sandwich after all. I mean, it could be, right? I think I may stay up all night just to ponder all of this.
